3 Ways to Motivate Your Group Fitness Classes

As an instructor, you know that sometimes your participants don't come to class feeling motivated. But the important thing is that they showed up! From there, it's up to you to give them an experience they will remember and one that will keep them showing up again and again. 

3 Ways to Motivate Your Group Fitness Classes

#1 Be PRESENT in your PERFORMANCE

Yes your classes are a performance! From the minute you get out of your car to the second you get back into your car after your ROCK STAR performance! You are ON STAGE, all eyes are on you! And if you teach currently or have ever taught group fitness you know, it is SOOOOO worth it! A great fitness instructor creates an amazing journey for their students. It is all about the EXPERIENCE. And you…..can make or break it. 

#2 There is so much VALUE in your VOICE

You have the stage. Make a difference. What you say on that mic matters! As fitness instructors we have such a great JOB! We get to move to music, laugh, sing, dance, wear cute legging but most importantly EDUCATE & MOTIVATE!! Take time before your class to map out some things you will purposely say on the mic. Because we all know we don’t have to map out the unexpected silly things that come out of our mouths during class LOL!

For extra motivation don’t just say “great job”, “looking good”, 4 more etc ….. try things that will bring out emotions. Tell a short story. Take a moment of silence (it's impactful). Use a student’s name. Motivate with just one word “WOW” while scanning your class. Remember our eyes have a voice of their own. Making eye contact and silently acknowledging someone’s hard work might just make their day!

The motivation someone needs might not come from the active part of class. It might just be the little thing that you said to them as they were entering the room or the high five you gave them as they were leaving. FIND THE MOMENTS.

#3 Movement + Music = MAGIC!

And of course - one of the top ways to motivate your class is with an amazing PLAYLIST! And you know POWER MUSIC has you covered on this one. From country to alternative, oldies to pop, rock to rap MUSIC really does MATTER….and not just during class. If possible have an intro song (sets the class mood), a class playlist that matches the feel of the format you are teaching and an exit song (something that leaves them feeling good and wanting more).

Remember music is subjective and the same song will bring out different emotions for each class participants. Use it as a guide. What type of experience are you trying to create?

  • Are you teaching strength? Use a playlist with a strong hard hitting beat!
  • Dance class? Create a playlist with all the current top pop hits!
  • What about Yoga? The options are wide open here. A little cutting edge… bring in some ROCK!
Music is one of the best ways to motivate your class and also a great way for them to get to know your personality and style. Music can and should create an amazing journey from the minute they walk in the door to the second they leave. ROCK ON!
